ARTIST STATEMENT | PERIPHERAL VISION

“Peripheral Vision” began as my thesis show in graduate school at the University of Colorado in Boulder. The title arose from my conviction that my vision was peripheral to current visual art practice. I also wished to celebrate that very peripheral position itself, to trumpet receptivity, nature, and the feminine.

When properly installed in a very large and tall room, like the galleries at the University of Colorado, which measured 140 feet around with 35-foot ceilings, and lit with Frennelle theater lights equipped with barn doors, the drawings actually receive the shadows of viewers once they approach within about 8 feet of the walls. The shadows also serve to alert the viewer that he/she is close to the drawings, which are unprotected from fingers or bodies brushing by.

The effect in the room is film-like and the story is told in simultaneous time. The viewer is encouraged to put the story together in his/her own way. This work, produced over the seven years from 1988-1995, can be hung in any order around a room. There are 550 running feet of drawings ranging from 6 to 16 feet tall.
